Failed outfit shots

The stars have to be in perfect alignment for me to take an outfit shot. My apartment's got to be clean, I've got to not look stupid, it has to be during the sunniest day of the year otherwise my apartment is darker than a cave. I live in NYC so there's no private outdoor space for me to go to take an outfit shot (without nosy neighbors/tourists/etc bugging me)

Some of you have been posting old outfit posts that haven't made it up for whatever reason (didn't like the outfit, quality reasons, etc). I figured I'd share mine too.

This is actually a very pretty dress, originally $300 at Top Shop. Then again, everything's like 300 at top shop. Then it goes on sale for $40 bucks, which is how much I paid for this. lolz my hair. camera angle too low. You can't see the studs. I'm stuck in the hallway of doors deciding between the lady or the tiger.

For a short while my hair was reddish, so I could take a few pictures in my GREEN living room that messes up my skin tone and anything I'm wearing. It's pretty bad, but not that bad here. the V bangs are cool, but sometimes they're just a teeeny bit off. Ugh these eyebrows. Also the look screams too "I'm in art school and my art is dominatrix performance art, baby. transgressive, baaaaby"

This is actually one of my most favorite outfits I put together. I wore it out to meet some friends and I thought I'd take a bathroom shot later. Well, I did:

So this one, you can tell I tried. I swept up, cleared some space. But I didn't wear any makeup and omg my hair extensions looked terrible. Also, I don't think I'm fooling anyone when I try to look cute.

Another one from that day. This one is passable. But I can't model cute. (Later, I took the extensions out, put on some lipstick, and did this much better post here, after major color correcting)

You've figured out my apartment layout by now. I've got the GREEN room, the BLUE room, the white hallway of doors. Somehow I thought it would be a good idea to throw a bedsheet over a bookshelf and give myself a new room.

So, this shirt is probably the best DIY I've ever done. the Sabbat cross (you'd know it if you were a Vampire person like me) is a bloodred color. but Of course I'd b/w and high-contrast the shit out of it and pair it with an upside down cross and a nose chain and a giant septum crescent. I remember thinking "how can I make the most 90s White Wolf picture ever...everyone will lulz" but then I realized no one would probably get the reference and I'll look like i'm trying way too hard. It doesn't look convincing at all. Crappy mirror shot would do that. didn't have selfies in the 90s.

Now these next few photos are my attempts at leaving my apartment, with it's crappy lighting and color-compromising walls.

Yep, this was how they all turned out. With my head cut off.

I went to this bar so I could take this photo. Alas, dark room, slow shutter speed, blurry photo.

Thanks, mom, for not taking a full outfit shot of my awesome vintage dress.

Hey, I've got an idea! Why don't I take some outfit shots using a pinhole camera! (actually i ended up posting these) The whole thing was a disaster. I eventually put the lens on the camera and STILL shot horrible pictures:

"Spare some change?"

Hope you enjoyed the lulz. Style blogging is fun, mishaps and all.

  1. When you pair them all together in one blog it looks really artsy and very 'you'. I think it's rad! ;)

  2. Oh boy do I know what you mean about outfit photos not coming out right! My bad ones are a lot less flattering though, they are things like the wrong angle that makes my already large head look too big and things like that!

I looooove the first dress! Very Stevie Nicks/ Siouxsie!

The one by the bookshelf reminds me of Morpheus from The Sandman, if the coat was black of course.

    I love the gold boots!

Oooh Sabbat cross! I knew my boyfriend was the one when we were first starting to talk and he lent me a copy of Vampire The Masquerade. Despite my fascination with (asome non-sparkly) vampires I have actually still never played it. But I think I like to make up stories best for myself as short stories or novels.

Also I WILL have an Alice in Wonderland floor one day!

    1. haha same with my husband. I knew he was the one when I found out he played and was Sabbat as well. I haven't played Vampire in a few years...been going through the other White Wolf games and Shadowrun.

  4. Ahahaa...fail outfits shots; I wish I kept some, so I could share some too, but actually, your pix are quite nice and fun. I was rather surprised, but the 'cutesy' you looks really lovely...:D

    1. yeah, you dress dark to escape normal, but when dark becomes the new normal, you start wearing butterflies and pastel floral ditsy prints.

  5. Urg outfit shots are so hard! But it's interesting how many looks you go through. You look so different start to finish!

  6. I love everything about this post. The "White Wolf" pic is my fav. I was really into that game. I still have Laws of the Night proudly displayed on my bookshelf

  7. This post is brilliant!! You almost inspire me to dig some of the shots out of my "MEH" folder to share (yes, I totally have a blog/outfit shots/MEH" folder on my computer). Except my failed shots aren't nearly as entertaining - usually just outfit fails or super dumb poses. I don't get creative enough with my shoots to end up with such a fun variety of unintentional, abstract awesomeness! :D

  8. I personally enjoy all of these photos. I think we are our own worst critics and we all like to look a certain way in our photos but you never know how they will look to someone else's eyes. I look silly and can't pose so I just post my outfits no matter what I look like in them.....well, now that I think of it I do have a fail folder...maybe some of those will see the light of day at some point.

  9. haha this was funny, but I do have the same problem. I´m even too lazy to make outfit pictures because it takes too much time for me and usually I love to get ready and do, without messing around too much. I also think that as much as we all love outfit shots, some outfits are better seen live with the personality of that person accompanying it and vice versa.

  10. Honestly, I think most of them are completely OKAY! HAHA. I'm not used to doing things like that, so if you take a look at my blog, you may notice the two pictures I have of myself simply suck. HAHAH. But then again, many of the pictures you've taken are quite good, in my opinion. :)
