Trend: Cold Shoulder Tops

I know what we'll all be thinking 5-10 years from now: Remember when we all wore those cold-shoulder (or off-the-shoulder) tops that one summer in the mid-to-late 2010s? The Lookbooker above has nailed down the look with every trend that's hot now: choker, tattoo jewelry, and a still-going-strong wide-brimmed hat.

The trend is kind of growing on me, esp since there aren't a whole lot of dark summer looks, and this trend checks many boxes. It's mysterious, flowy, seductive. Many goth brands are also doing their take on this look:

off-the-shoulder

bwa-haha yes i made the models hold hands

There are times I'm wrong about trends and this is one of those. I never, in a million years, thought this would take off the way it did. Literally everyone in NYC is walking around in these. How do people with boobs wear them? Judging from the cups that are jumping out through the fabric, strapless bras. Also some are not wearing bras at all. I have two tops I'm waiting for my hair to grow out to hide the bra straps. Or maybe I'll just wear a bra with straps in my skin tone. I refuse to wear strapless bras---they do nothing. Half the reason why I hate this trend is that it looks so damn fussy. fabric that's draping off, limiting your movement. Raise your arms? Not an off-the shoulder top anymore. It's a cowl neck top in one second. The shirts that are basically tank tops with attached arm-warmer sleeves like the ones above seem a lot more wearable. One of the above hits another trend too! The choker top.

If you're looking at this trend and are thinking, WTF I can DIY this, you are right. There are a few involved tutorials on YouTube that require sewing and adding elastics, but Carah Amelie below has simple cut-out instructions (cold shoulder top is the first segment, but there are other great t-shirt tutorials that are worth watching)

I wore one one of these today and, yeah, it kept riding up into a cowl neck. Hate these tops tbh.
Look what's behind me!!
What do you think of this trend?

  1. I like your examples of this trend. For myself I prefer the fitted dresses with peek a boo shoulders, and the peasanty looking ones you've shown here are quite pretty and may have sold me on that style. In any case, it's much better than that loose waist crop top trend that was popular several summers ago. I got one in a Sourpuss lot and wore it maybe three times. It felt like maternity wear, it was just a square of fabric with an elastic through the top!

    1. Ha I remember the square pattern. Bet the clothing manufacturers loved that trend

  3. I like it when shoulders are just peeking. Or when the sleeves hang very low, but the whole garment is held by straps. In general, the straps must be there. I hate typical boat necks (the peasant-type blouses) and I cringe at 14-year old me for wearing them.
I like the long dress, where is it from?

  4. I totally agree with you! Doing anything while wearing a top like that is frustrating, and I too cannot stand strapless bras! ^_^

  5. I think these were a mild trend in the 90s/ 200s? I remember wanting a jumper with cut out shoulders like in the Placebo Pure Morning video clip.
