2016 Dark/Goth Fashion Trend Recap

There was more of the same this year: nu-goth is still the dominant dark fashion trend, taking the best of traditional goth and 90s fashion styles. Here are trends that reached its peak or debuted in 2016. Want to wear your hair in a bun and go shop at H+M? Check out the 2015 recap. Wondering where the moons and tattoo necklaces are? Those are back in the 2014 recap, though there were plenty in 2016.

Makeup trend of the year: drawing/gluing stuff on your third eye.
Yes, I'm aware that this has been around for a while, but this is the year I can no longer ignore it. Literally everyone is doing this now. I'm not a fan of it and will never do it, but it is what it is.

Style icon of the year: Psychara
Honestly, there's only a few ootd style microbloggers I get excited about and of those, Psychara is the one with the most followers on Instagram and Tumblr (though I don't go on tumblr anymore). She's kind of 00s goth, kind of mori, kind of nugoth, kind of whatever her sponsors give her at the time. All her looks are original and uniquely hers and refreshing after many photos of "modern witches" wearing H+M who all look the same.

Body modification of the year: Tragus
I'm not completely sure why everyone ran to get these done this year, but I'm thinking the sudden influx of cool jewelry had something to do with it. Before all you could get was a tiny ring, but now there are all kinds of studs with cool designs that you could get.

Hair Trend of the Year: Wigs
Why is everyone wearing wigs? Are more wig companies sponsoring Instagram trendsetters? Are people fed up with dying their hair and want to wear wigs? Has the quality of wigs gone up? I don't know, but I'm seeing wigs everywhere.

Accessory Trend of the Year: Chokers
I did a post on these!

Goth Brand of the Year: Killstar
For real, I don't want to give it to them again, especially with their absolutely awful Marilyn Manson collection. That was just the WORST. Like who needs a bodysuit Manson's face on your crotch? Why is that a thing that someone would buy? People apparently liked that garbage, but below is a more palatable look that highlights their better designs. Any other brand suggestions?

What were your most favorite and least favorite trends this year?

  1. I just burst out laughing at your words "glue stuff on your third eye" :D I instantly imagined people putting fake lashes on their forehead.

I would love to wear more wigs again (used to do it more in 2012) but unfortunately I could not get away with it at the place I work. The reason for wanting to use more wigs is quite simple: my hair is thin and I suck at making hairstyles. Wigs are so much easier! :D

    1. They've got those dumb third eye sunglasses, so why not eyelashes lol

  2. Oh, yes, you can buy much better quality wigs for literally next to nothing now and most companies have a huge collection of styles in all kinds of colors and fun shades.

  3. I'm sorta over seeing Kill Star everywhere, but they seem to be reigning supreme! I really like Deiadre's stuff, but I like the whole dollie look. Hehehe! Nice recap as always!!!

  4. I like wigs, they ate great if your hair sucks but I can't afford decent ones!

I really want to know how people with tragus piercings wear headphones? Do they have to abandon earpods and go back to big chunky earmuff headphones?

    1. I almost dropped serious cash on a wig good enough for everyday wear, and am so glad I didn't. Even the good ones are uncomfortable

  5. I really like about 50% of Killstar stuff, the rest is either just meh, or plain awful. Still, if I had to choose just one brand to buy until I die, Killstar would be it.
As for wigs, it's a fast, easy and non-damaging way to change hairstyle and/or colour, so I'm all for it.

    1. Haha I feel exactly the same way about Killstar. If I could wear one brand, that would be the one

  6. I'd add antler/horn headdress...things(..?) to the list, these have been going on for a while tho, but now they're really everywhere.

Not really that excited about goths(etc) jumping into that rapid cycle of trends tbh. It's none of my business what others choose to wear, but kind of being part of the scene(in finland) it gets uncomfortable to notice some mass-hysteria over shiny pieces of over priced but under qualified trendy objects.

    1. Yeah the antlers replaced the flower crowns lol. The consumerism bothers me a bit too (despite being part of the problem, lol), but if people have the means and desire to express themselves with the shiny new thing, why not

  7. Lol, I put dots/stuff where my third eye should be waaay before it was cool. it's pretty much my basic party makeup.
Ach Psychara... I've been following her for more years than I care to admit and I must say she has gone a long way from being cyber/scene goth. I think her styles are beautiful (aside from the chunks of things on her forehead, wtf?) but I cannot stand her when she opens her mouth. Her eyes aren't kind...

I thought the septum still had it's place this year, I haven't noticed much change in the piercing department.
And I also think wigs were everywhere. I just don't get it, wearing a wig is the most uncomfortable thing in the world for me...

I think shoes were a bit modest this year, no crazy platforms or demonias, more winklepickers perhaps?

    1. I thought i commented earlier! lol yeah, those big things on her forehead were pretty much what I was thinking of when I wrote "I couldn't ignore it anymore"...and it caught on! Still love all her outfits and style. I'm glad about the modest shoes, since those are usually wearable. But I think those are on their way out for 2017!

  8. I think many etsy designers did get a chance this year, for example sovrin apparel is one of the best goth brand I saw this year and it's not stupidly commercial.
