Packing for Florida!

So I'm leaving for Florida in a few days to visit my dad. He lives in a retirement community not too far from the Everglades. I'll be there for about 7 days and am really looking forward to it, especially after all these cold days. When I travel, I like to match the local colors...greys for Nantucket, browns and oranges for leaf-peeping in Vermont, lame cruise wear for cruises. So... I've basically got to match my outfits to this

#challenge 15: advice for baby bats?

Read about the challenge here

Baby bats! Lol this term makes me giggle. I know a lot of people hate it, but I think it's adorable. I never grew up with this term...when I was younger we just called those kids posers. Of course we were never new to the whole thing ;)

So, 3 things I wish I was told when I was a "baby bat"

1. Get all the piercings that you want. Really, you can always take them out. Most facial piercings (not ear) vanish to nothing when you take them out. DON'T get tattoos when you're a poser--I mean, "baby bat."

2. Don't start smoking, even when the cool kids are doing it.

3. Disposable income is nice. Spend your money and have fun with it. Unless you're saving for a pair of boots, just spend the $140 you make from your part time job while you go to school and live at home. Go to concerts, shopping, fancy coffee.

Work shoes: Corp Goth's mid-month status report

Shoes... you guys know I like shoes. (Hell, I've made them from scratch.) I actually haven't owned too many in my lifetime, mostly because I'd rather buy one good, comfortable pair than 5 cheaper, uncomfortable shoes.

So, shoes for work. I work at an office in midtown, so I have to do a lot of walking and stair climbing around the subway system. Heels are usually out. My winning shoes are my Erin Oxfords from Frye,  which I paid a small fortune for. I also wore them for every interview. So light and comfortable. I love them to death.

see the whole outfit at this post

I keep some shoe polish at work and shine them a few times--they look good as new. They also look fabulous with a pair of black skinny jeans or work pants. But they're no good in the winter or rain. For cold days I wear my hand-me-down cowboy boots from my sister. Hands down, these are EVERYONE's favorite in the office.

BCBG... she got them when she worked at Bloomingdales

And also my Frye boots. You can tell I love Frye. They're actually lined on the inside so you can fold the top down. Also, I really LOVE that there's no side zipper. you actually have to lace and unlace the shoe when you put on/take off. The web development team likes these boots.

For the longest time I couldn't wear heels. I couldn't walk in them at I have a really wide foot suited just fine for boots (Rivethead to the CORE). But then I decided to give it a shot with the Jeffrey Campbell Potion boots (which were on sale for $50 from like 200 or whatever they usually cost). They were pretty high quality leather and were surprisingly comfortable. I've even walked about 20 blocks in them and was totally fine. So I wear these in the summer, for more dark looks. (check it: I'm waiting a narrow high-waist skirt, one of my most essential work wear items, as I've blogged

Next up, it's always been a personal goal of mine to have a pair of heelless shoes after I saw these hoof John Fluevog shoes in 2003 (one day, they'll come back):

So I was really excited when the Jeffrey Campbells were on sale for $60--$60!!! at the local shoe store. I got them, but still too cold to wear them. I can't wait to wear these to work. From the front they look kinda like normal mary jane heels, with some platform.

And a video of me walking/hopping/stupid stuff in them, for anyone is the awesome Crystal Stilts, "Magnetic Moon" playing from my computer speakers.

#challenge 12: Combining fashions

Read about the original challenge here.

Challenge #12: combining other fashions with goth fashion. Well, there's some overlap between this challenge and #1 (5 essential items every goth wardrobe should have). Sure, you can cheat and just add a spiked collar and combat boots to X and call it goth-x...but it looks lazy.
