Red and Black Week: editorial

So, here's the editorial I shot (see you do get outfit posts from me!) and edited for Red&Black week, inspired by people filming their analog TVs and putting them up on youtube for pirating or whatever. I love the distortion that you get when you photograph an analog tv. I wanted to do it with my tv, but couldn't think of a way to get my digital camera photos on the tv. I finally burned a disk, hoping to get it to work on my ps2, but of course, at that moment my ps2 stopped working. 

So, analog tv lines come to you courtesy of Photoshop pattern layer. there's black lines and a separate lined hue pattern to create that color "buzzing" effect. Also increased the contrast. Not like the real thing, but whatever.

Trying to rethink corsets so they don't look so damn ren-fair, hence AA t-shirt. Awesome T-shirt, by the way. Thin, kind-of-sheer, really soft. This look definitely wouldn't work with a standard oversized t-shirt. Those pleated skirts are in style right now... like the whole 'professional' or perhaps 'school-girl' look to them. Spiked collars look really dated and costumey, but I thought it went well with the spikes on the corset, which I got on sale! Hurrah

Medieval Dungeon

Loved this medieval-inspired collection from all-saints. I had been eyeing this 200+ sweater forever, and then it was on sale + plus birthday money. Then hooray--mine. despite how holey it is, it's very warm.

detail on the clips. the clips are patinated so it looks like they are rusted. HOW COOL

Bralets are pretty awesome

These are really comfortable and look really cool, and I got a cheapo one from H&M. It's like half of a corset. You can actually breathe. I'm picky about bras and I love this kinda-granny style. I'm on the hunt for more though: they are impossible to find. I was optimistic when I found Top Shop carried them online:

But no luck at the store. Plus, while Top Shop always looks cool in photos, their clothes are actually pretty cheaply made. I took a look at their lingerie section, and the bras were flat and cardboardy.

I don't know how I'd feel about wearing a bra as a top, but waistlines getting higher, who knows!

Goth V Bangs

Goth V Bangs: 1) how to cut em and 2) how to style em


1. Cutting it: The rules are the same as cutting any bang style. Cut it dry. Don't use tension: let it fall naturally over your face. If you have a cow lick around your bang area, don't work against it trying to get a geometrically "even" cut... it won't LOOK even. Use sharp scissors. I've got really thick hair, so I had to add some 45 degree layers to avoid a too-blunt bang. Cutting the bottom of the shape of the "V" is self-explanatory. The top of the V, around your hairline, can be tricky. Cut it SHORT... this is probably terrifying for a lot of people. I ended up using a razor to shave a bit of my hairline back. 

 2) The thing that sucks about the V bang is that you can't just get up and go. You HAVE to blowdry it, otherwise it starts "popping" up or curling (in my case). The ONLY way to keep it down is to blow dry--you won't be able to get them to be flat against your face with a flat-iron. Comb them straight, and pull on your bangs with your hands (I can't get the proper tension with a brush...maybe you can, though), flattening them against your forehead, and blow-drying at the root. Once your hair is dry, use the cool setting to "set" the hair in place because if the hair is still warm, it could go back to whatever it is that it does. If you've got naturally frizzy hair, like me, go over with a flat iron to FLATTEN the hair... not to straighten it (you've already done that while blow-drying).

I love this tunic from Bllack Nior! Bat-wing sleeves, leather at the bottom hem and around the collar, long sleeves with thumb holes! Kind of reminds me of Lydia from the old Beetlejuice cartoon (hence the high ponytail).
