I'm seeing everyone on Instagram and on retailer's pages pull the waistlines of their fishnets over the waistbands of their pants. The wide band of the waistband gives it a strappy look that's been very popular the past few years, while the fishnets provide coverage and a pattern. So it's basically an evolution of the strappy nu-goth style into the more mall-goth looks of the 00s. It's a more post-apocalyptic/industrial look than the ultraclean lines of nu-goth, which didn't really use fishnets at all. (Sorry for the wordy paragraph.)
Btw what is that belt loop circle thing? It's kind of cool |
Honestly I don't know why I never did this in the 90s-00s, when fishnets were the rage. I guess I thought people would think I was a crazy person who didn't know how to wear hose. I also feel like back then, underwear was a thing to be hidden. Also the waistband of fishnets look like underwear. Maybe it was just in my circle where we didn't do this and everyone everywhere was.
Even Forever21 is doing this on their catalog shots. The below would be a modern goth look if her look was more monochrome. The other key to this look is to not have a lot of fishnet showing past the waistline. The model below is showing a little more than the few inches necessary, but that is because of her exaggerated posing. If she stood straight like a normal person, it would be a few inches.
I like trends like this, when you wear things you already own in new ways. Thoughts on the trend?
I have been doing this for a long time now...not because of any trends but because sometimes I get those one size fits all fishnets. I am really short and they are too long for me LOL That is a cool outfit you are wearing
ReplyDeleteI like that people come up with new ways to wear existing things and, admittedly, I think it's kind of sexy when this is done the right way. However, whenever I see this look, I want to tell the model/person that their undergarments are showing. :)
ReplyDeleteNO. Absolutely fucking NO. It's not pretty, it's not cool or whatever, it's '14-year old trying to look sexy and failing miserably'. If there was only the thick band, looking like a belt worn on bare skin, then yep, awesome, but with these fishnet diamonds underneath it's just repulsive.
ReplyDeleteI do this! Particularly with my ripped high waisted jeans. Then I get the knees and tummy area covered in fishnets. I like that you tried it with a high waisted skirt! I haven't seen that very often.
ReplyDeleteAlso, by the way. I tagged you in the Darkling Tag. Pretty sure I remember you saying sometime that you don't do these, but I thought I would let you know anyway. :)

I quite like it-- if hosiery stayed around my waist at all, then I would likely be sporting it too.
ReplyDeleteYasssss! Goths and grungy!
ReplyDeleteThanks for talking about this! I keep seeing it in gothy model pictures, but so far not on any bloggers. I always cut my fishnets into thigh highs and use a garter belt, so I won't be able to try it until I buy some more.
ReplyDeleteI always thought it was a Kardashian trend turned goth. Very handy for goths though.
ReplyDeleteLove your outfit! I enjoy the look of it.....too bad it wasn't in style when I was a bit more svelte, lol!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought about it being nu-goth evolving towards mall-goth, but that's so true! Alas, I am not those people who reveal their midriff (not even when it's covered with fishnet) so I pass this trend. It looks nice on others, though! :)
